The myth of Lorely is a famous German folktale, that depicts the story of a beautiful siren with long golden hair, that lured sailors to their doom as they sailed over the Rhine River. Originally created by German author Clemens Brentano in his 1801 Ballad Zu Bacharach am Rheine, the story goes that Lorely, after being betrayed by her love, was accused of bewitching men, and as punishment, was sent to a nunnery. On the way, thinking that she has seen her love in the Rhine, she jumps in and falls to her death. And there she has always remained. It is clear that Brentano was deeply inspired by the myth of Ovid and Echo.
